Dr Joanna Biegańska-Banaś

Assistant Professor at the Department of Bioethics and Health Psychology, Jagiellonian University Medical College.
Psychologist, PhD in Medical and Health Sciences. Certified Clinical Psychologist (Neuropsychologist), Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapist.

Research interests:
Her research interests focus on health psychology, clinical psychology, medical neuropsychology, and medical psychology. She conducts studies on the psychological functioning of patients with metabolic diseases, as well as on the impact of illness on the psychological and social quality of life of patients and their families. Her scientific activity also includes issues related to psychosomatic disorders, stress associated with somatic illness, psychological trauma, and the psychological aspects of pain.

Teaching and organizational activities:

  • Conducts academic courses in health psychology, clinical psychology, and medical psychology (lectures, seminars, workshops)

  • Serves as the supervisor for the 2nd year of the Master’s program in Nursing

  • Supervisor of the Student Research Group in Health Psychology

  • Supports the development of young researchers as a thesis supervisor and reviewer

Recent research projects:

  • Beliefs of caregivers of adult patients with Niemann-Pick Disease and their relation to perceived stress and anxiety: a project focused on the psychological aspects of caregiving for patients with rare metabolic diseases, analyzing the role of cognitive schemas and stress perception in caregiver functioning (funded by Jagiellonian University Medical College).

  • Neuropsychological functioning of patients with Niemann-Pick Disease Type C (NPC): a project aimed at verifying the cognitive impairment profile in NPC.

  • Adaptation to type 1 diabetes: narrative analysis of patients using transactional narrative analysis: a project aimed at advancing knowledge on psychological responses to chronic illness.
